Home Carpentry – Part 2: Baseboard & Trim : The Moulding Details That Make a Room Look Finished
A room can have fresh paint, new flooring, and beautiful furniture, yet still feel incomplete if the trim is worn, missing, or poorly installed. Baseboards and moulding are the details that connect the walls, floors, doors, and windows into one finished look.
Welcome to Part 2 of “Home Carpentry: The Ultimate DIY Guide for Utah Homeowners.” In this guide, I’ll cover the basics of baseboard installation and trim carpentry, including how to choose moulding, measure accurately, cut corners, handle uneven walls and floors, and finish the job cleanly.

Understanding the Different Types of Trim
“Moulding” is a broad term for the decorative or functional pieces used to cover transitions and add character to a room. The most common types include:
Baseboard: Installed where the wall meets the floor. Baseboard protects drywall from bumps, vacuums, furniture, and routine cleaning.
Door casing: The trim surrounding a door opening. It hides the gap between the door jamb and the wall while creating a finished frame.
Window trim: Installed around windows to cover the installation gap and add visual weight to the opening.
Shoe molding or quarter-round: A narrow piece installed along the bottom of baseboard when there is a small gap between the trim and flooring.
Crown molding: Installed where walls meet the ceiling. Crown molding is decorative and can make a room feel taller or more polished.
Your trim profile should fit the style of the home. Simple square-edged trim often looks best in modern spaces, while more detailed profiles may complement traditional Utah homes.
Measure Before You Cut
Trim installation is one of those projects where careful preparation saves expensive mistakes. Start by measuring every wall individually. Do not assume opposite walls are the same length, especially in older homes or rooms with several layers of flooring and paint.
Create a simple room-by-room list that includes:
Wall length
Inside corners
Outside corners
Doorways and openings
Transitions between different trim profiles
Locations where a long wall will require a joint
Purchase approximately 10 percent more material than your measurements require. Extra trim accounts for cutting waste, damaged pieces, and the occasional cut that does not fit as planned.
If you are installing wood or MDF trim, allow it to acclimate inside the home for several days before cutting. Utah’s dry air and seasonal temperature changes can contribute to movement. Letting the material adjust to the home’s interior conditions can help reduce shrinkage and gaps after installation.
Mitered Outside Corners
Outside corners are the exposed corners where the baseboard turns outward, such as a hallway corner. These corners are normally joined with mitered cuts.
For a typical 90-degree corner, each piece is cut at approximately 45 degrees. The long points of the two cuts should meet on the outside face of the corner.
A few tips make outside miters easier:
Measure the wall carefully and cut pieces slightly long when possible.
Dry-fit both boards before applying adhesive or nails.
Check the corner angle instead of assuming it is exactly 90 degrees.
Use a thin layer of wood glue on the mitered faces.
Hold the pieces tightly together while fastening.
Sand lightly rather than removing too much material at once.
Not every corner is square. If the joint opens at the front or back, the angle may need to be adjusted. A quality trim carpenter learns to cut for the actual corner, not the corner that should be there according to a textbook.
Coped Inside Corners
Inside corners are where two walls meet and turn inward. Many DIY installations use two miter cuts at inside corners, but coping is usually the more dependable professional method.
To cope a joint, install the first piece with a square-cut end. Then cut the second piece with an inside miter so the profile is visible. Use a coping saw to follow the profile line, removing the material behind the face of the trim. A slight back-cut helps the visible front edge fit tightly against the first piece.
Coped joints are valuable because walls are rarely perfectly square, and homes naturally move a little with changes in temperature and humidity. A coped joint follows the trim profile and is less likely to show an obvious gap over time.
Coping takes practice. If you are working with expensive stain-grade wood, consider practicing on scrap pieces first.
Installing Baseboards
Before fastening baseboard, place each piece against the wall and floor to check the fit. Mark stud locations with a stud finder or pencil. Nail into studs whenever possible, generally every 16 to 18 inches along a straight run and near the ends of each piece.
A pneumatic finish nailer is faster and usually leaves smaller, more consistent holes. It is especially helpful for a whole-house project. A hammer and finish nails can also work well for a smaller repair, although it takes more care to avoid dents and visible hammer marks.
Use nails appropriate for the trim material and wall construction. Avoid placing nails through delicate decorative details where the moulding could split. If the wall is wavy or there are areas where studs are difficult to reach, a small amount of construction adhesive can help hold the trim against the wall. Nails should still be used to secure the piece while the adhesive cures.
Handling Uneven Walls and Floors
Uneven surfaces are common in Salt Lake Valley homes, especially in older properties or rooms where flooring has been replaced several times.
If the wall bows away from the baseboard, do not force the entire piece flat. You may create stress, gaps, or a wavy-looking installation. Instead, use adhesive in the low areas and add fasteners where the trim can be pulled into position.
Uneven floors require a different approach. If the bottom of the baseboard leaves a noticeable gap, the trim can often be scribed to the floor. Set a compass to the widest gap, run it along the floor, and mark the bottom edge of the board. Cut along that line and test-fit the piece again.
Shoe molding or quarter-round can hide small flooring variations, but it should not be used to cover major installation problems. If the floor is significantly uneven, the underlying flooring or subfloor may need attention first.
Filling, Caulking, and Painting
Once the trim is installed, the finishing work makes the largest difference in appearance.
Fill nail holes with paintable wood filler or matching putty.
Sand filled areas smooth after they dry.
Apply paintable caulk along the top edge where the baseboard meets the wall.
Caulk small gaps at corners and joints as appropriate.
Use stainable filler for stained wood, and limit caulk on visible stained surfaces.
Prime raw MDF and unfinished wood before painting.
Apply the final paint or touch-up coat after the filler and caulk are finished.
You can paint trim before installation, especially when working with floors or walls that are already finished. Pre-finishing reduces brush work in tight corners and can create a cleaner result. However, you will still need to fill nail holes and touch up the joints after installation.
For painted trim, many homeowners install the pieces first and then caulk and paint everything together. Either approach can work; the right choice depends on the room, material, and project schedule.
Common Trim Installation Mistakes
The most frequent problems I see include:
Measuring only once instead of dry-fitting pieces
Assuming every corner is a perfect 90 degrees
Using inside miters where coped joints would perform better
Cutting all the pieces before checking the first few
Using too much caulk to hide large gaps
Nailing without locating studs
Forgetting to acclimate wood or MDF
Installing trim before confirming the finished floor height
Failing to account for the direction of the moulding profile
Rushing the filling, sanding, and paint-touch-up stages
Trim work rewards patience. A small error repeated across an entire room becomes very noticeable, while an extra few minutes spent test-fitting can save a full piece of material.

Baseboard installation is a manageable project for an experienced DIYer, but it can become challenging when walls are uneven, corners are out of square, trim profiles are detailed, or several rooms need to match.
